I promised an update on “Project: Master Closet Organization” but have been putting it off due to lack of progress.  Day 1 was strong, I did load of laundry after load of laundry, packed up every pair of jeans that I don’t wear or doesn’t fit, and followed some really helpful infographics I found on Pinterest to separate clothes into different piles.

It was looking like this project was going to finally get finished, and then…then I hit a wall.  I’ve seen so many beautiful closet organization pins that are definitely dream-worthy, but unfortunately they just don’t ‘fit’ our space.  I contemplated getting clear totes or baskets to store clothes in, but unfortunately the shelving is too high for all 5’7″ of me to reach easily.  I didn’t want to start spending money on this project and end up just changing it later on.

The overall layout of our closet has a few flaws…we have folding doors that look nice, but they take up 6″ on either side of our closet opening (when they’re open!)  It’s hard to use our entire closet with a rather small opening and the only shelf being well out of my reach.  My master plan is to eventually move our bedroom door (this will help out our living room, too) and then we can have “his” and “hers” closets, rather than one big closet.  I would love a closet that is so beautiful that I can leave it exposed {*big sigh}…oops, I’m back!  I was day-dreaming there for a bit.

I will share some of my favorite closet pins with you, so you can daydream about organization with me.  (That’s normal, right?!)  These are beautiful and I will be adding them to our 10 year plan (along with my kitchen remodel that involves knocking out an entire wall).  The one lesson I’ve learned from doing our own remodeling projects and living on a farm…it takes a LOT of patience.  Things will get done, but not in the 6-8 week timelines that we see on HGTV.  Note to anyone living in the midst of a home renovation project: TURN OFF your HGTV…It can lead to depression, indecision, and excessive money spending! Haha. Or just watch at your own risk.

So, for now, our master bedroom and closet is going to stay a disaster zone, and I’m going to put my efforts into our guest bedroom/office.  Not that we are having any over-night guests anytime soon, but with fall and the holidays coming up, I want to be prepared.

As we were cleaning out our garage last weekend, I found a beautiful mid-century dresser and headboard that I would like to paint (the existing wood probably wouldn’t handle refinishing as well), and put in our guest bedroom.  As with our room dining room/kitchen, I am sticking with a neutral, black and white color theme.  It’s one of my favorite color schemes (achromatic) and I’ve always wanted to design a bedroom this way.  I found a few pins for inspiration and will definitely keep you updated on the progress of the dresser and headboard projects.  I’m thinking two-toned black and white for the dresser (black frame with white drawers) and a black headboard.  The walls in the guest room are white and I plan on keeping them white for now, as it keeps it bright and open.  We will be mounting our extra TV on the wall and using it as an extra movie/game-room when it’s not being used for guests.
